Posted on November 25, 2017 by

Last Saturday, 8/4/12, I brought out my 340 SC to finish the last 5 rounds of PMC .357, 158 gr. I usually shoot .38 special and +P occassionally. The first three rounds went off without a hitch, but on the fourth the gun came apart. Funny thing is nothing felt any different from any other time. But when I went to put the front sight on the target for the last round I couldn’t see the sight. It was gone.

The pics that follow should be interesting. Tomorrow the gun goes back to S&W. It will be interesting to see their response. Fortunately there were no injuries. Any ideas are welcome.

WOW, I had a shot behind a squib that blew up one of my barrels and it felt like I was just shot by somebody. I can’t imagine your surprise when you looked and the entire front end of this pistol was missing. I would guess that the shot came off as normal and everything went with the bullet to absorb the real shock the pistol suffered from. I’m banking on you getting a brand new pistol courtesy of S&W. By the way, no matter what they find, you shouldn’t plan on getting any note of apology from them. It’s not something their known for at all. sadly, they’ll replace the pistol and that’ll be good enough for them.
I’m glad you safe and sound. Please let us know how they handle it, in all aspects of the deal.

I’ve got a 360SC, and it kicks like a mother with magnum loads, so I definitely understand how you may not have immediately noticed the damage. I’m very interested in hearing what S&W says about it, particularly if they have suggestions or admonitions about anything you should or shouldn’t have done.

Lucky. Real lucky. Just another reason why I only buy all steel S&W’s and no pressed sleeved barrels.

Here’s an update… received a brief email from S&W, they’re replacing the gun. They cannot say when though because of a manufacturing backlog. Thank you S&W.

A couple weeks ago I received a new M&P 340CT from S&W. I did not get any “opinion” on the reason for the ka-boom. But am glad to have the pocket gun.

I have been to the range and loaded some .38spcl in it. Next time I’ll shoot some Hornaday .357 that I have.

Many thanks to S&W and to all of you who replied to my posts. I’ve learned a lot.

I will post a pic from their website, and some of my own later.

They will have to replace it. When that happens it will have to go to your FFL because it will have new numbers.

Not true actually. If you ship a gun to a manufacturer, even if they replace with a new one, they can ship it right back to you. I’ve had it done several times by Glock & S&W
